I suppose it's different if you live a fair way from the nearest grocery store. But, for me, I usually go about once a month for staples (bread, meat, rice, canned goods, etc.). For produce and dairy I go more like once a week, since it tends to go bad if I don't use it up quickly. Plus, I prefer fresh produce (even if I have to pay a bit more for it) than two week old lettuce that was already slightly wilted while it was still in the store (I tend to shop at Superstore, and they tend to have really shitty produce, so I usually get my produce from Safeway--it costs more, but it's fresher, and it's convenient because it's within walking distance of my apartment).

So, there is my answer to your question (which was probably rhetorical).

EXCUSE ME? Our food isn't that fresh? Let me remind you that our town is at "the end of the line", and it is really tough to get fresh produce. Please feel welcome to bring some, next time you visit. And if you think our food is old, try eating crackers at Grandad's.

I can fit like $60 worth of food into those little baskets at save-on. I don't know if you're trying hard enough, or I'm just uneconomical, lol.

My parents are the same as your parents. They rely on their freezer though too, for a LOT of storage of what we would usually buy fresh.
